Colorado SWANA Rocky Mountain Chapter is offering the Manager of Landfill Operations (MOLO) certification training class in Gunnison, Monday through Wednesday, April 24 – 26, 2017 with certification exam testing on Thursday morning, April 27, 2017. This MOLO training will touch on the unique needs and challenges of rural landfills as well as introducing some Colorado-specific issues for Colorado attendees. An optional Math Tutoring session, offered Tuesday evening, April 25, is included in the registration fee; indicate attendance when registering.  The instructors will be available during the evening for tutoring sessions and assistance.

  • Meals: Breakfasts and lunches on 4/24, 4/25, & 4/26 are included with registration fee. Evening meals not included.
  • Course materials will be distributed Monday, 4/24 at the start of the first class.  Course materials included in the class registration fee.

Location & Lodging:

Training classes and testing will take place at the Holiday Inn Express in Gunnison. Colorado SWANA has negotiated discounted guest room rates at the Holiday Inn Express.  Hotel room reservations need to be made by April 21, 2017 to receive the the discounted rate. Extra fees and taxes not included. Registration Fee:

The Colorado SWANA Rocky Mountain Chapter is partially underwriting the course and exam fees for SWANA members. Separate registration is required for the MOLO Certification Exam. All course and exam registrations must be received on or before April 7, 2017.

MOLO Certification:

  • Objective: To provide professionals involved in the daily management of municipal solid waste landfills with the basic information to run a successful operation.
  • Content: This 3-day course consists of presentations by SWANA landfill certified instructors, classroom exercises, case studies and a tour and field exercise at a local landfill. Please bring a calculator for class activities.
  • Highlights: Summary of regulations impacting landfill owners and operators. Descriptions of the most recent advances in landfill operations equipment, alternative cover materials, leachate treatment systems and landfill gas control techniques. Discussion of controversial and potentially problematic waste streams faced by landfill operators, including debris from terrorist attacks, diseased animals, treated wood, electronic devices and gypsum drywall.

*To achieve certification, trainees must register and pay for the exam; and pass with a minimum score of 70%.

  • SWANA Intern Instructor: Aaron Byrne, Solid Waste Director, Summit County Resource Allocation Park, Dillon, CO

What to Bring:

  1. Pencils, rulers and calculator to use during the class. During the exam testing, trainees may not bring their own formula sheets, scrap paper, reference sheets, training manuals or other handouts into the testing room. Calculators, formulas, diagrams and extra workspace for calculating answers will be provided for the exam testing period.
  2. Personal protective equipment (PPE) including steel toed boots, safety glasses, hard-hat, safety vest, pants for the landfill tour on Wednesday.
  3. Paper and Post-It® to take notes.
  4. Reusable drinking containers for both hot and cold beverages. Let’s try to create as little waste as possible.

Discipline Levels:

Trainees will select one of the three Discipline Levels below:

Certified Manager Qualifications:

  • High School Degree or GED;
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in Integrated Municipal Solid Waste Management (IMSWM); 4-year degree in a related field may be substituted for up to 2 years;
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience in management/supervisory position in the discipline for which you are applying; and
  • Receive a passing grade on the examination.

Technical Associate Qualifications:

  • High School Degree or GED;
  • Involved in the planning, design, implementation, operation or promotion in the MSW field, but do not fit into the above category (e.g., consultants, planners, vendors, regulators, etc.);
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience in management/supervisory position in the discipline for which you are applying; and
  • Receive a passing grade on the examination.

Inspector Qualifications (Landfill Discipline):

  • High School Degree or GED;
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in IMSWM;
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience as an MSW landfill inspector and currently hold that position; and
  • Receive a passing grade on the examination.
